Mary Bowker teaches middle school math and science at CACO. She has been teaching and working with kids and their families in a variety of ways since 2000. She has tutored privately and with Sylvan Learning Center, spent several years as a classroom teacher for middle and upper school Math, Physics, Earth and Life Science, as well as 6 seasons of Outdoor and Environmental Education and 2 seasons of curriculum development with OMSI's Cascade Science School in Bend. Mary earned her Bachelor's degree in Physics from Binghamton University in New York.
Mary has also been involved in many experiential educational programs, working outdoors with a variety of ages ranging from teaching 4 years old to ski to leading senior citizens hiking, biking, kayaking, and bird watching in Maine and California. Through several exciting years of teaching and learning in non-traditional settings, Mary has had the opportunity to study in East Africa, lead groups of teenage volunteers in Dominica and Mexico, work as a sea kayak guide in Maine, and take personal climbing trips throughout the US, and to Canada, Mexico and Thailand. She has also traveled and volunteered in Central and South America with Habitat for Humanity, Santa Martha Wildlife Rehabilitation Center, and The Andean Spectacled Bear Project. With safety as a top priority, Mary is currently certified as a Wilderness First Responder and has a Class B Commercial Drivers License.
When not working, Mary enjoys many of the outdoor activities Central Oregon has to offer, such as skiing, mountain biking, and climbing. She also spends a fair amount of time fostering dogs with All for Dogs Rescue and skating for the Lava City Roller Dolls roller derby team.
