Rebecca Hilary Smith ("Miss Becky") feels that making music is a birthright equivalent to speaking one's mother language, and tries to instill that ability through movement, singing, and playing classroom instruments. Above all she hopes that children will think of music as something that they personally are capable of creating and enjoying, that they will not be only passive consumers and listeners, leaving the music making to "those who are really good at it".
She is a native Oregonian who earned a B.A. in Music at the University of Oregon in 1986. Although involved in singing and piano playing throughout her life, she took up study of the harp while at University, and now counts it as her primary instrument.
Her career, which has spanned Oregon and Hawaii, has included teaching, both privately and in schools, directing a church choir, creating an after-school music program for young children, and playing folk and classical music in various small groups and orchestras. When not relearning the many words for "snow" "ice" and "cold", she has been finding new friends and reconnecting with old ones in Central Oregon, recording a CD of Hawaiian music, and teaching private harp lessons.
